Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, or ADSL, is a technology that
provides broadband Internet access over a standard residential or small office
telephone line, at speeds that are an order of magnitude faster than the best
dialup modem connection.
ADSL is a revolutionary shift in the way you access the Internet. Unlike
traditional modem based 'dialup' access, ADSL is an always-on technology, which
means that you don't have to wait to connect up - your computer is always 'on
the net'.
ADSL operates through your standard telephone line without interrupting your
use of the telephone. You can place and receive telephone calls at the same
time as you use the Internet. You do not need a second telephone line, and you
will never have to 'dial up' again!
Is
it Expensive ?
ADSL is not
as expensive as you might think, once ADSL is activated you no longer need to
make a phone call to connect to the ISP, ADSL is always on. If you make a lot of
calls during a month accessing your mail or due to dropouts etc then you will no
longer have this expense. For those who have a second line for there internet it
would also save you as you could get rid of that other line saving you line
rental costs.
Can I use my ADSL line for phone calls ?
Once
you have ADSL you can still make and receive phone calls in the normal way, you
will need either a Filter or a Line Splitter depending on your type of setup.
This also means you can get rid of that second line if you want, that in itself
would save you a considerable amount in line rental.
Do
I need a Special Modem ?
Yes, you need an
ADSL modem to use the ADSL network. There are various makes and models about
including Internal, USB and external modems as well as ADSL router/modem
combinations. You can supply your own or purchase one from Yorke Systems, we
