| Maximum line speeds for your dial-up modem,
are limited by the voice frequency bandwidth and level of noise, on the copper cable
connecting your service to the Telstra network. |
Modems sold as 56K (V.90, K56Flex and X2) are
capable of line speeds up to 52kbit/s, but the Telstra telephone network is designed for
voice calls and has a guaranteed data speed of 2.4kbit/s. In practice, most customers
achieve modem speeds significantly higher than 2.4kbit/s, but rarely 52kbit/s. |
| Maximum line speeds are also limited by the
length of the copper cable connecting your service to the Telstra network. |
Check the distance from your home or office
to your local Customer Access Module(CAM)*. All else being equal, a high speed modem 4km
from the local CAM cannot be expected to achieve the same line speed as a modem less than
1km from the CAM. |

| Check for noise on your telephone line by
picking up the phone dialling "1" and listening for scratchy sounds or static.
(Remember, if you are using a telephone extension lead, also check for noise on the
extension lead by unplugging your modem and plugging in a phone.) |
If you pick up the phone and dial
